How it works

Behind the generator

  1. 1

10 brief templates spanning the formats that designers, copywriters, and AI tools actually need - standard, single-message, insight-led, objection-first, competitive-positioning, launch, retention, AI-format, designer-format, single-paragraph.

  2. 2

Mustache-style interpolation against your inputs. Templates are fixed (not LLM-generated) so they ship in milliseconds and produce consistent brief structure across campaigns.

  3. 3

Output is starting structure. Polish the specifics, add reference creative, attach asset links, hand off to the executor (designer, copywriter, AI tool).

  4. 4

When you want briefs that build automatically from your competitive context and brand voice, Shuttergen reads your category and generates briefs end-to-end.

Why most creative briefs fail

The most common creative brief failure isn't structure - it's specificity. A brief that says 'target millennial parents who care about sustainability' is unactionable; a brief that says 'target parents who've bought organic baby food in the last 90 days and are skeptical of plastic packaging' produces sharp creative. The structural template matters less than the input specificity, but the right template forces the discipline to be specific.

The second-most-common failure: too many objectives in one brief. A brief that lists 'acquire new customers, build brand awareness, drive trial, increase consideration' produces creative that does none of those well. The single-message brief format above is specifically designed to force the choice - one objective, one message, one piece of creative.

The third failure: missing the insight. A brief that lists product features but doesn't articulate why the audience cares produces creative that talks about the brand instead of speaking to the customer. The insight-led brief format addresses this directly by leading with the audience insight and treating the product as the response to it.

How to use briefs with AI generation tools

AI tools (ChatGPT, Anyword, Jasper, Copy.ai, Shuttergen) are only as good as the brief they're given. The AI-tools brief format above is specifically structured to paste cleanly into any of those tools and produce on-brief output:

For ChatGPT / Claude: paste the brief, then add 'Produce 5 ad copy variants in the [tone] voice for [platform]'. The brief gives the model the specific context it needs; the instruction gives it the deliverable.

For Anyword / Jasper / Copy.ai: use the brief as the 'About your product' field. These tools wrap LLMs with prompt engineering; feeding them a structured brief instead of a free-form description produces materially better output than starting from scratch.

For Shuttergen: feed the brief plus your brand examples. Shuttergen reads your category competitors automatically and tunes the output against both your brief and the competitive context. This is the highest-leverage use of a brief.

The brief is the meta-input. Any AI tool downstream of a strong brief produces stronger output than the same tool downstream of a vague brief. The 10 templates above force the brief to be strong before it ever reaches an executor.

Brief format vs deliverable format

A creative brief is not a creative spec. The brief sets the strategic context (audience, insight, objective, message); the spec sets the tactical execution (channel, format, asset specs, deadlines). Conflating them is a common failure mode - briefs that include 'must be 15 seconds, vertical 9:16, MP4, under 100MB' alongside 'audience insight' force the strategic thinking into the same document as the production logistics. The two need different rhythms.

Recommended workflow: use a brief template like the ones above for the strategic context. Attach a separate spec sheet for production logistics. Hand off both to the executor. The brief is the why; the spec is the what.

For agency / vendor handoff: the standard creative brief and competitive-positioning brief formats above are the most agency-friendly. They include enough context for the agency to do strategic work; they leave the tactical execution open enough for the agency to add value.

For internal team handoff: the designer brief and single-paragraph brief are usually enough. Internal teams already have the strategic context; they need the tight one-page summary.

Internal: creative-brief for the full guide; ad-creative-brief-template for downloadable templates; best-creative-brief-examples for worked examples.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Is this creative brief generator free?
Yes, fully free. No signup, no email gate, no usage cap. Generate as many briefs as you want. The upgrade path is Shuttergen for briefs that build automatically from your competitive context and brand voice.
What's the difference between a creative brief and a campaign brief?
Creative brief = strategic context for a single piece of creative (audience, insight, message). Campaign brief = strategic context for a full campaign across multiple creatives (objective, KPIs, channels, budget). The generator above produces creative briefs; the brief templates can be adapted up to campaign level by adding budget and KPI sections.
Should I use a different brief format per channel?
Yes - somewhat. The standard brief works across channels. The competitive-positioning brief is sharper for Meta and Google where comparison shopping happens at the click. The retention brief is purpose-built for email and retargeting. Match the format to the use case.
How is this different from ChatGPT generating a brief?
ChatGPT generates briefs from free-form prompts; this generator interpolates your inputs against 10 validated brief archetypes. Templates force the structural discipline that good briefs need. Best workflow: this generator first for structure, ChatGPT for phrasing polish.
Can I use the brief format with AI ad tools?
Yes - the AI-tools brief format is specifically structured to paste into ChatGPT, Anyword, Jasper, Copy.ai, or Shuttergen. The structured input produces materially better AI-generated output than free-form descriptions.
How long should a creative brief be?
One page maximum. The single-paragraph brief format above is genuinely usable for most cases; longer briefs tend to dilute the strategic focus rather than sharpen it. If your brief is over a page, you're probably mixing the brief with the spec - separate them.
